Meaning
Fixed wing unmanned aerial vehicles refer to unmanned aerial vehicles that rely on fixed wings to generate lift and propel forward with power. They have a similar appearance to traditional manned fixed wing aircraft and are the mainstream type of unmanned aerial vehicle for long endurance and large-scale operations.
Basic principles
- Relying on wing aerodynamics: When an aircraft flies forward, the airflow flows over the wings to create a pressure difference, generating upward lift to support the body.
- Powered by propellers or jets, it provides forward thrust and overcomes air resistance to achieve cruising.
- Control the flight attitude (pitch, roll, yaw) through aerodynamic surfaces such as ailerons, elevators, and rudders.
- It is necessary to maintain a certain forward flight speed to maintain lift and cannot hover in place like a multi rotor.
Main features
- Extremely long endurance: high aerodynamic efficiency, with endurance usually measured in hours, far superior to multi rotor aircraft.
- Fast flying speed: suitable for long-distance rapid arrival and large-scale coverage.
- Long range and large operating radius: capable of completing cross regional tasks.
- Strong payload capacity: capable of carrying high-definition cameras, infrared pods, radars, communication relay equipment, etc.
- Need for takeoff and landing site: Conventional fixed wings require runways or catapult takeoff/parachute recovery, and some can be equipped with vertical takeoff and landing modules.
- Good wind resistance: Strong stability during high-speed flight, suitable for complex weather conditions.
- Unable to hover for observation: Fine viewing of small targets is not as convenient as multi rotor.
Application scope
■ Military reconnaissance
Border patrol, battlefield reconnaissance, target surveillance, communication relay, and damage assessment.
■ Surveying and Land
Aerial surveying, 3D modeling, land survey, forestry census, cadastral survey.
■ Electricity and Energy Inspection
Long distance transmission line inspection, oil and gas pipeline inspection, wind, electric and photovoltaic station inspection.
■ Agricultural plant protection
Large scale farmland sowing, fertilization, and crop protection operations (with much higher efficiency than multi rotor).
■ Emergency and Security
Forest fire monitoring, flood disaster investigation, large-scale area security, and maritime search and rescue.
■ Ocean and Maritime Affairs
Coastal patrol, fishery law enforcement, marine environment monitoring, and island and reef patrol.
